'Take her to the Sea, Mr. Murdoch' at the Beaufort library
The downtown Beaufort library will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic with a one-man theatrical presentation by Howard Burnham on Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m.
The acclaimed one-man show, "Take her to the Sea, Mr. Murdoch", is a 45-minute fully costumed dramatic monologue in which Burnham, in costume as Captain E. J. Smith, will trace the remarkable history of transatlantic steam navigation while providing his take on the Titanic's disastrous demise.
There is no charge for the program. Space is limited to 75 persons.
Mosquito spraying today, Friday
Heads up, the Beaufort County mosquito control team may be conducting aerial spray missions during daylight hours on today, March 29, and Friday.
They'll use low-flying aircraft to apply EPA-registered public health insecticides and do not treat the salt marsh habitats for adult mosquitoes.
If you hadn't heard, mosquito season is off to a heady start this year, stepping up mosquito control that has already been flying runs — it doesn't usually start until April.
Two Beaufort County schools earn "Palmetto's Finest" award
On Tuesday, four South Carolina schools were designated as "Palmetto's Finest" — and two of those were in Beaufort County.
Hundreds of Beaufort County school supporters clapped and cheered in Columbia as Beaufort Middle School and Hilton Head High School's names were announced.
With the double victory in the middle and high school categories, Beaufort County became only the third South Carolina district in the award's 34-year history to have two winners in the same year, according to the sponsoring South Carolina Association of School Administrators. The other two districts were Greenville County, by far the state's largest, and Columbia's Richland District 2.

Seabrook man arrested after Gray's Hill shooting
Jerry Maurice Wright, 21, was arrested just after 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, after a shooting at 16 Paradise Lane in Burton [map below] that left one man injured.
Beaufort County sheriff's deputies responded to the reported gunshot at the home at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with 18-year old Shaquille Jenkins who had been shot in the leg and witnesses said that the shooting had been the result of an alleged altercation between Jenkins and Wright over the discipline of a minor sibling to …
Come see Beaufort's iconic homes during Spring Tour of Homes
As it continues to celebrate its Tricentennial year, the Parish Church of St. Helena has announced its 56th Annual Spring Tour of Homes will be Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5.
This year's tour of homes includes six historic homes in the Point section of Beaufort, as well as six plantations around the Beaufort area and a historic church. In addition to being able to visit the interiors of these the homes and plantations and learn about their histories, attendees also will be able to hear Docents talking about the gardens.
