Auditions at Atlantic Stage

 Casting Notice

Atlantic Stage announces one full day of auditions for The Nerd, the final production of its 2013-2014 season.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, February 8th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. in Room 212 of the Coastal Carolina University Myrtle Beach Education Center, 900 79th Ave N, Myrtle Beach SC 29572.

Show and roles being cast are:

  • The Nerd by Larry Shue, directed by Thom Penn.  First rehearsal date:  Tuesday, Feb. 25th.  Performance dates:  Mar. 20th (preview)-Mar. 22nd at 7:30 p.m., Mar. 23th at 3 p.m., Mar. 27th-Mar. 29th at 7:30 p.m., Mar. 30th at 3:00 p.m., Apr. 3rd-Apr. 5th at 7:30 p.m., and Apr. 6th at 3:00 p.m. and Apr. 10th-Apr. 12th at 7:30 p.m., and Apr. 13th at 3:00 p.m.

    • One of the funniest plays ever written, this extraordinarily inventive, side-splitting comedy was first presented by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, then produced in Great Britain, then went on to Broadway.  The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he's never met but who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid "nerd" who outstays his welcome with a vengeance..

    • Roles being cast:

      • WILLUM Cubbert (male, mid-30s).  A professional architect, likable and sincere, unexciting and set in his ways.  Willum needs a little gumption.

      • AXEL Hammond (male, about Willum's age).  Dry, wise-cracking, irreverent, devil-may-care theater critic who has never done an anonymous favor for anyone.

      • Warnock WALDGRAVE (male, 35-60).  Powerful, stern, and successful businessman totally lacking in imagination.  The last time Waldgrave smiled was 30 years ago, and then it was gas.

      • CLELIA Waldgrave (female, 30-50).  Patient but strained, harried but calm, the picture of a schoolteacher almost but not quite stressed to her breaking point.

      • THOR Waldgrave (male, 9-11).  The son of Warnock and Clelia Waldgrave is a bratty who is a temperamental, loud, boisterous, irrepressible young monster.

      • RICK Steadman (male, mid-30s).  Tactless, selfish, insensitive, aggravating, pointlessly dull, and the worst houseguest ever.  Note:  the actor playing Rick Steadman will be playing 3 parts (Rick, Kemp, and Red) and must be able to disguise his voice as Rick and Red.

Performers may call or email for an appointment.  Appointments will be scheduled in five-minute time slots.  Call (843) 424-0224 Monday-Friday between 12 and 5 p.m. or email to make an appointment.

Performers without appointments will be seen throughout the audition day, when slots are available and as time permits.

All performers should prepare one comic monologue totaling no more than 2 minutes in length and be prepared to cold-read selections from the script.

We look forward to seeing you at Atlantic Stage!
