Accounting, Social Media, the IRS, and being in the Know …. What does this have to do with ?
Yesterday I attended another networking meeting in my area (beautiful Myrtle Beach, SC). The featured speaker was Dorien Morin of More In Media. She is an expert in social media management, engagement, and networking. She spoke about how using Social Media is a must in this day and time and that your business can grow substantially based on the level of your engagement in social media. She discussed several platforms that you can use including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Yelp, Pinterest, etc… (the list can be endless) however, she stated that your success depends on what you put into it. (As with most things as we know!)
Now, a few months ago, I knew about less than zero about social media. I mean, what does an accountant need with social media? Well, at that point, I had my personal Facebook profile page which I used to communicate with family members and friends across the country. I had heard about other things but really? Tweeting? And blogging … for real, what could I possibly write about and why would anyone read a blog about accounting?
Well, Dorien, being the intelligent, and sweet lady that she is, spent some of her precious time and showed me things from a different angle. For instance, blogs …. How many of us read articles in magazines? How many of us learn something new from having read them? … there you go, the answer to blogs. And since, most of us won’t have our article published in Time magazine, we need ways to get the news spread ….. ergo, linking it up onto Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and the like.
Again, what does this have to do with accounting and the IRS and such? Well, let me ask you. How many of you get emails from the IRS? Or read accounting magazines or other such tax bulletins? I heard that …. Yeah right is exactly what most of you are saying. The next question is … how many of you would like to know the bottom line of what the IRS is going to change and how it affects you? I know that more of you said me, me, and my business.
I wrote a blog a few days ago on the fact that the IRS is being asked to change its refund timeliness measures. This began with information that came to me by way of an accounting magazine which published a link to the Oversight Committee of the IRS which was posted electronically online a couple weeks ago, so that anyone has the chance to find out what is going on.
Ta da …. Social media rears its head. In my opinion, there is a place for everyone and every type of business in social media and being a part of the electronic age is important. (Hey if the IRS can change its antiquated computer processes, then you can too!) So not only has my business grown substantially because of social media (I have clients all over the US now), but my knowledge and understanding of my profession has grown as well and helped me to be a better business owner and a better accountant.
